Hygiene Appointments

At Chester Smiles we believe that prevention is the best cure and we recommend that you visit our hygienist at least once every 6 months. During a hygiene appointment an accurate record of your teeth and gums will be charted in particular noting any irregularities. This will be followed by a professional clean which entails:

Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed by gentle scraping with special dental instruments.

Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of gum disease!

Teeth polishing: Remove stains and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling by using special pastes and sprays.

Your diet and home care is of the greatest importance in maintaining a lifelong healthy smile. Click here to read an article about the effects of diet on your oral health.
